Agua Fresca

dweber posted this June 26th, 2013

Aguas Frescas are such a great thing to drink on a hot day.  Literally translated as “fresh waters” they’re a delicious combo of fruits, cereals, flowers or seeds, blended with a sweetener like honey or sugar and water. Our favorite is watermelon and we like to mix it with a splash of vodka for a refreshing cocktail.  Matter of fact, we’re planning on serving this drink on the 4th of July  — and so should you!

6 pounds seedless watermelon cut into 2-inch pieces
2 cups of cold water
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon agave nectar or honey
Ice cubes
Lime slices and mint leaves for garnish
Good vodka.  We like Hangar 1, Grey Goose or Ketel One.

Cut the watermelon flesh from the rind. In a blender, process half the watermelon pieces with 1 cup of water until smooth. Pour through a strainer into a pitcher. Repeat the process with the remaining melon and water. You should end up with about 8 cups of juice. Stir in the lime juice and honey/agave. Pour over ice and vodka and garnish with lime slices and mint.

Have a happy holiday!
