This season we’re taking a page from the Norwegian’s cabin culture and leaning into reconnecting with nature and loved ones.

More than 400,000 cabins (hyttes) and holiday homes are spread across Norway, from the sea to forests and fields – quite the stat for a population of around 5 million. These hyttetur trips can also be at shared cabins post-hike or ski trip with a hot spiced bun and warm fire waiting.

Shared or private cabin, the commonality is a cultural desire for a strong and close bond with nature. Cabin getaways mean disconnecting to reconnect, whether it’s over board games and a warm beverage, or trading everyday chaos for the calm and quiet of nature. They’re a valued part of Norwegian heritage and an all-too-common response to, “What are you doing this weekend?”

The perfect cabin stay looks a little different for everyone, but we think there are a few quintessential elements to make it cozy. Here’s our take:

Slow down… or do nothing at all

Close the laptop ‘til Monday, set the phone aside, and lean into a weekend without a to-do list. Dust off a board game instead of watching a movie, or swap conversation cards. Or curl up and watch the snow fall over a catch-up with friends.

Enjoy cozy food and beverages

Pop some cinnamon buns in the oven or prep a hearty stew for later in the day. Sip on hot chocolate, cider, or mulled wine. Meals and drinks are a beautiful and meaningful focal point for gathering together.

Be close to nature

There’s something special about fresh snow. The landscape is quiet yet opens the door for playing – even if it’s only tromping through soft powder. Strap on snowshoes, skis, or stroll around the block without a timeline or watch. 

Sleep in

Go to bed when your body says it’s tried and don’t set an alarm. Enjoy the view when you wake up and go slow with the morning routine.
