Featured Factory Partner: Hemp Fortex
From day one, we’ve been committed to making clothes differently by putting sustainable and social practices first. For our factory partnerships, this means working with companies that prioritize people and the planet, push for innovation, and invest in their local communities.
Together we’ve been able to create some of your favorite Toad styles and we’re excited to spotlight our progressive partners.
We began working with Hemp Fortex more than 10 years ago. Based in Shandong, China, they are innovators in hemp fibers and circular manufacturing. They also help us make our beloved, breezy Taj Hemp styles.
How Hemp Fortex Produces Low-Impact, High-Performance Hemp Fabrics
Created with the belief that fabrics can be both sustainable and high-performing, Hemp Fortex manages every part of their fiber-making process: from hemp seeds to finished garments. Hemp is one of the most sustainable plants in the world, as it requires minimal water, no pesticides, grows quickly, and gives back to soil health. This vertically integrated process allows them to create durable, breathable hemp fabrics with a lighter environmental footprint.
But Hemp Fortex’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t end there…
Solar Power and Circular Manufacturing to Reduce Waste
Hemp Fortex has invested in solar power across all of their factories, generating 12 million kWh/year. That’s enough power to cover 70% of their total energy consumption!
To minimize landfill waste and close the loop, they have incorporated circular principles, including recycling and reusing scrap fabrics and materials. Additionally, they have an eco-friendly degumming factory with chemical-free processing, enzyme processing (for hemp fiber), and using leftover water for organic liquid fertilizer.

Ethical Labor Practices and Community Investment
Sustainability also means supporting people and communities. Hemp Fortex ensures that all of their employees are treated with respect, paid fairly, and work in safe, healthy conditions. They also are big on supporting their community. Here’s just a few examples of what this looks like in practice:
- Offers employees 6 months of maternity leave
- Helped farmers and employees install rooftop solar systems
- Support local villages with food, financial aid, and tree planting initiatives, including a leprosy village’s needs for washing machines, desks, and stationary
- Donated garments to Nepal during earthquake relief
Certifications That Reinforce Transparency and Accountability
Finally, Hemp Fortex’s accountability and commitment to sustainability extends to their certifications. These include the Global Organic Textile Standard, Organic and Recycled Content Standards, Global Recycled Standard, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Fair Trade Certification, and more.
