Featured Factory Partner: Via Joes
From day one, we’ve been committed to making clothes differently by putting sustainable and social practices first. For our factory partnerships, this means working with companies that prioritize people and the planet, push for innovation, and invest in their local communities.
Together we’ve been able to create some of our most beloved Toad styles and we’re excited to spotlight our partners’ progressive initiatives.
Our partnership with Via Joes spans more than 15 years. Based in Chenai, India, they specialize in recycled fibers. These fibers come from cutting room waste – AKA scrap fabric from the clothes-making process – that would otherwise be thrown away. Once reclaimed, they can be recrafted into an entirely new garment… like your favorite Re-Form Flannel.
Why Recycled Fibers Matter
Via Joes sources our recycled cotton, which means they are helping reduce the demand for virgin cotton. Cotton takes enormous amounts of water to grow, process and dye. By utilizing recycled cotton fibers, we’re cutting down our footprint significantly – no sourcing new cotton and the fabric is already dyed. Together, we’ve saved 46 million liters of water since we began making our Re-Form styles in 2016.
Additionally, re-use of fibers means less textile waste going into the landfill. It’s a win-win closed-loop system!
Water and Energy Innovations
Via Joes also goes above and beyond to protect natural resources:
- Rainwater harvesting: Prevents stormwater contamination, protecting waterways and aquatic life by sending only rain down the drain
- Energy efficiency: Converted their sewing machine clutch motors to servo motors, reducing power usage by 40-50%
- Solar power: Installed a 50 KVA solar plant that covers roughly 20% of their annual electricity needs
Social Initiatives That Make a Difference
Sustainability isn't just about materials – it's about people, too. Here’s how Via Joe’s supports their employees and community:
- Provide monthly donations to a local senior living home to support nutrition, healthcare, and shelter
- Annual internships for 20-30 local college students
- Offer blood donation drives in collaboration for VHS Blood Centre
- Support NKT Girl Higher Secondary School with electrical needs like LED lighting and fans
How Via Joes Makes The Magic Happen
In 2024, we used 9,779.97 kilograms of recycled cotton yarn – 846.6 kilos of that was color sorted. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the color sorting and recycled fiber process at Via Joes:
